geophotographic re-exploration of the fortieth parallel
geophotographic re-exploration of the fortieth parallel (2015)
A re-documentation of the prepatory journey of the 19th century USGS land survey team, enlisted to create the "Report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel" (1867 - 69), from the Bay Area to Nevada City, CA. This leg of the journey was uniquely unproductive. The data gathered was ommitted from the official report created for the US War Department. I drew upon the ambiguity of this moment to reimagine the possibilities of a geophotographic survey that unquantified the view. Each diptych contains a frame placard posing two rhetorical questions to the viewer, such as "what was the event?" and "when did it occur?" These questions came from notes I took during a lecture by Jan Jagodzinski on the anthroprocene.
